#Sponsored My Wake up call about underage drinking

I participated in an Ambassador Program on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Anheuser-Busch’s Family Talk About Drinking program. I received a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

As you know, I have been participating in Anheuser-Busch “Family Talk About Drinking” Ambassador Program through Mom Central. I have covered many ways on how to talk your children about underage drinking and hosted a gift card giveaway for a $25 E-gift card to be able to do something special with your teen so you can have an open talk about the subject. I enjoyed reading everyone’s comments on how they would use the gift card and how they keep it real with their kids. I’m so happy to see so many parents “being real” and having these tough talks with their children at different stages of their life! It’s so important for us as parents to keep the subjects alive and fresh not just at the end of the school year but all the time. The lucky winner was Carolsue!

As most of you know last year we moved so, this year my kids had to start a new school. We had to deal with a lot of changes. I didn’t really know how this would affect my kids or what type of friends they would have. As a mom, I must admit I was worried that they may pick the wrong type of friends! However, I have to admit this has been the best school year in a long time. My kids all have great new friends and the best part is their parents’ share the same values, concerns, and rules that we do! So, I know that not only do I have my kid’s best interest in mind but their friend’s parents also do. I also feel comfortable talking to them just like I do with my own kids, which allows me to have conversations with everyone and know that we are all on the same page.

So now that my kids last day of school was Thursday, I took the time to sit down with them again to talk to about underage drinking and summer events. This time I ask them what they thought about drinking. I wanted to hear more on what they actually thought and felt about the topic instead of me telling them. It was very eye opening to say the least and I felt great as a parent how open they were about it. I was also shocked to hear that they know many peers who have already tried alcohol and drugs! This was a real wakeup call as a parent! I am glad that they think it’s stupid and wrong to do these types of activities and understand how dangerous it is.

Parents please don’t ignore this! Underage drinking is real and its happening everyday! I will be honest I expected it at our old community and knew it was going on but since we now live in a upscale community and my kids go to one of the top schools in Georgia I really didn’t think that it would be such as issue or happen as much. Just typing that made me shake my head that I really thought that would make a difference! Teens are still teens and peer pressure is still there no matter where and who your kids are around. As parents, we just have to stand strong, teach our kids right from wrong, and be open with them. Don’t ever think if you just don’t talk about the subject it’s not happening or will just go away.
