Did you know May is National Mobility Awareness Month? Freedom and mobility are daily pleasures that can be taken for granted, My Mother was diagnosed with Spinal stenosis a couple of years ago. She can no longer do the simple things that she used to take for granted. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the open spaces within your spine, which can put pressure on your spinal cord and the nerves that travel through the spine to your arms and legs. Spinal stenosis may occur as a result of spinal injury, surgery, abnormal bone growth, or deterioration. In some cases, spinal stenosis may be inherited as an autosomal dominant genetic trait. In her case its due to Heredity since now her siblings seem to also be suffering with the same thing.
She has tried every treatment method available and even had surgery to try to correct the problem. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t help because her nerves were damaged before having the surgery. So now she deals with chronic pain on a daily basis. She can’t even walk a short distance any more by herself. We hate seeing her go through this but we try to get through it together as a family making sure she is comfortable as possible. We are currently in the process of getting her a Motorized Power Scooter so she gets some freedom. That also means that we are looking for vehicle or Carrier that will make transporting her much easier for all of us! .
After spending many nights researching I have found that There are precautions you can take to ensure you are not taken advantage of when purchasing a vehicle. In case you aren’t familiar with The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association, they are focused on improving the lives of those with disabilities. To make a long story short, they are the best source for wheelchair accessible vehicles and mobility equipment.
