I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals Inc. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

As many of you are aware, I shared with you about how Opioid addiction has affected my family last month. I will admit it was really hard to share my story, because as we know it’s not something people talk about a lot. However, sharing my story and being able to connect with others was just what I needed. It allowed me to see that the issues we are dealing with in my family are more common than I thought. As I support person I am not alone. I also learned about a great support site called Reset Reality.
ResetReality.com is an online resource where you can find information and tools to help learn about opioid dependence, including a symptom screener and a resource to find a doctor that is certified to treat opioid prescription painkiller and/or heroin addiction. Additionally, people can share their “Words of Reality” or lend support with words of inspiration. I spent a lot of time on the site reading people’s stories. The story that touched me the most was Karrie’s Reality, it sounded just like my sister’s story. However, we are not at the recovery part yet but it leaves me very hopeful when I read Karrie’s story and how she was able to turn her life around.
More about Reset Reality
Reset Reality is public health initiative designed to spread awareness and understanding about the prevalence, science and treatment of opioid prescription painkiller addiction in the United States. It encourages those living with prescription painkiller addiction to step back, reflect and hit the “reset” button by working with a healthcare professional to work towards creating a new “reality.”
Opioid addiction is a very serious issue and it affects everyone involved. However the first step with overcoming the addiction is admitting it and wanting to get the help. I actually thought that we were at this step. My sister agreed to go into the drug court program a few weeks ago but refused to go into a treatment center. We really wanted her to get into a treatment center but she convinced the Judge it wasn’t needed. She seemed to be doing pretty good. She even spent Thanksgiving with us and was supposed to start a new job Monday however I got word Monday morning that she took off Saturday and missed her support meeting. I admit I was actually shocked! I thought she was ready to get clean and do right. So now we are waiting to see what is going to happen at this point since she is not taking her court orders seriously.
So my advice to anyone who is dealing with this is not give up! I know it’s hard especially when the person won’t take the first steps, but we have to let them know there is help out there and they can overcome this addiction.
