While the majority of people never experience fraud, having a credit card that is secure is more essential than ever. Luckily, there is plenty of protection in place for fraud victims, so you won’t normally lose out financially. However, being a victim of credit card fraud can still be hugely inconvenient and stressful, so you should do all you can to protect yourself against it.
To cut the risk of credit card fraud ever happening to you, make sure you follow these tips:
1. Keep your details to yourself. It should go without saying, but the number of people who tell their credit card details to partners, family members, friends and even work colleagues is surprising. Even if it’s more convenient to give your credit card to your best friend to buy something for you, you shouldn’t be giving out your details (especially within earshot of strangers) or even handing over your card in the first place.
2. Keep a close eye on your credit card. Using your credit card in everyday like, it’s easy to become complacent about it. However, you must be very careful when using it in restaurants and stores, keeping it in sight at all times. If someone takes the card away from you, they could be making a copy of the information contained in the card’s magnetic strip, which could be re-used illegally.
3.Read through your monthly statements carefully. It might be boring, but it’s important to read your credit card statement through every month to check that all the transactions it lists were actually made by you.
4. Only use your credit card on secure websites. These are clearly marked in internet browsers, but as a general rule, if you have doubts whether you can trust a website or not, don’t use it.
5. Keep all documents relating to your credit card safe. After your credit card application is approved, you will receive documents in the mail about it. You should keep these safe, making sure to shred them if you don’t need them anymore rather than carelessly throwing them away.
6. Report lost or stolen credit cards right away. If your credit card goes missing, don’t wait until you’ve asked around everyone you know and re-traced all of your steps trying to find it. The only way to be sure of preventing credit card fraud is to report it to your card provider immediately, who can cancel the card before it falls into the wrong hands and issue you with a new one.
