Taking care of your children’s teeth is one thing many parents are concerned with, and yet it isn’t talked about that much. Even most pediatrician’s offices don’t give much information on when to start caring for your child’s teeth and how to do it in age appropriate stages. You should start caring for the gums before teeth even come in, and build upon each stage as your child grows and teeth develop.
Check out these tips for dental care for your kids by stages and ages.
Infant: Clean your infant’s gums with a finger brush- it slips onto your finger and you can rub your child’s gums with it. It cleans the gums and gets your child used to the sensation of brushing their teeth. It also feels good on gums that are sore from teething.
First teeth: Most babies get their first teeth in around 6 months of age. When they do, use a soft bristle baby brush and fluoride free toothpaste to brush the teeth once a day. You will do this for their baby teeth until they are around two years of age.
Toddlers: Toddlers should have their first dental check up around two years of age. This is when you can also start teaching them how to rinse out their mouths with mouthwash and how to floss. Based on your dentist’s recommendations, you may need to change the type of toothpaste and toothbrush your child uses.

This is also a great time to really discuss what foods and drinks are good for your child’s teeth and which are harmful. Teach them these things early and they will learn to avoid too many sweets and other foods that can wreck their teeth as they age. Also make sure they understand the importance of proper tooth care, and be sure to take them to the dentist every six months. At this young age, kids’ teeth change often and need professional monitoring.
Older children: Keep up the routines and education established when they were preschoolers, but take them to the dentist once a year and monitor their loose teeth. Complications can arise when adult teeth come in, so you will want to make sure the baby teeth are healthy and fall out properly to make room for the adult teeth. If adult teeth look damaged or weak, or if they don’t grow in within a month a baby tooth being lost, contact a dentist to see your child.
