Last Month I decided to talk to my 10 year old daughter about menstruation for the first time. She will be in the 5th grade next fall and that’s when I started my period for the first time. I don’t want my daughters’ first experience to be like mine! My mother must have thought I was too young to start in the 5th grade because we sure didn’t have that talk!  The bad and funny part is even when I started; my FRIENDS AND OLDER SISTER told me everything I needed to know. My Mom was not very open to talking about most things.
I decided that the sooner we talk the better! Unfortunately I was too late!  Apparently my niece who is 11 told my daughter all about it already! I wasn’t even aware that she had started yet herself! I was a little upset but also glad that I wasn’t coming to my daughter with something she has no clue about. She had many questions that I answered honestly.  I wanted to provide as much details as I felt that she needed at her age.   When that “big day” comes I already have another nice little mommy daughter afternoon planned where we will talk more details that cover more than the basics.
On average, most girls start their periods when they’re 12 or 13 years old (although some begin earlier or later).  We all know that no two kids are the same and no one can tell you exactly when her period will start but there are consistent stages of puberty that you can monitor so that the two of you can both be prepared.
The other day when we were in Wal-Mart we passed the female products and my daughter pointed and just smiled like it was our little secret.  I have noticed that she’s paying more attention to me now and notices when I am on my period. She will ask questions or make comments when I am fussing about my cramps LOL!
The other day when I got invited to the blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Kotex I was very excited!  Kotex has a new line out called the U.  The new line of tampons, pads and liners, which feature a slim, thinner design, making them easier and more comfortable to use. With bright, bold packaging and colors, girls don’t need to feel embarrassed carrying them around in their purses or scared if someone sees.

Kotex will offer free samples of the new U by Kotex line, now available at Walmart stores around the country. For more information, and to download a fun Daily Journal iPhone or iTouch application that lets you take pictures, add play lists and geo-target your location for each entry, visit www.walmart.com/ubykotex.

Time to stop all the weirdness about periods, don’t you think? Progress is where it’s at. Every video watched, every comment made and every question asked helps change unhealthy attitudes and Break the Cycle* Let’s embrace a new attitude and join together to Break the Cycle*. With each new signature, U by Kotex* will give $1 to support social change through Girls For A Change

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Kotex and received products necessary to facilitate my candid review. In addition, Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

I have talked with Gillian some on this… I didnt start until I was in the 7th or 8th grade, I do not remember but my mom never talked to me about it either. However, I get no privacy in the bathroom so when its that time Gillian just strolls on it LOL at first she thought I was crapping my pants SO I had to explain what it was….

I bought a kit I want to say in 2008 from Amazon from a company by the name of PetiteAmie dot com. The kit is called My First Cycle Kit for Girls. I’m still hanging on to it in hopes of my daughters first period. So, I dont think Kotex was the first one in this market.
