I’m not talking about how Jameson car bombs are all the rage these days, sorry to disappoint anybody who thought so. No, I’m here to encourage the thought that those of us with Irish in our blood and proud of it shouldn’t have to sit around between April and February of the following year waiting to let it out with pride. Saint Patrick’s Day shouldn’t be the only time it’s okay to be proud to be Irish.
It’s sad to say, however, that anyone who wears a bright-green sweater or dress outside the month of March is typically going to catch the wrong kinds of stares. However, there’s a steadfast item of style that will not only continue to be fashionable, but also gives you a way to show off your heritage all year round.
I’m talking about emerald jewelry. The stone evokes Irish thoughts of the lush green hills and fields rolling out to the rocky outposts of Ireland’s jutting black shores. It was Irish poet William Drennan who made the first known connection between his land and the emerald, and it’s been the adopted precious stone of the Irish ever since.
Emerald naturally catches the eye, but its gleam is as modest as it is majestic. This is because of the signature green color which draws our thoughts towards nature and away from the spoilage of man’s tinkering. There’s a certain down-to-earth attractiveness of the emerald that defines Irish ideals and the Irish way of life in general. Diamonds, blue sapphires, rubies, and other glowing gems are all beautiful in their own right, but the emerald alone represents the exquisiteness of nature reduced into a single sliver of earthly rock.
Emerald rings, necklaces, brooches, and earrings all do a terrific job displaying Irish heritage without making too big a deal about it. If Saint Patrick’s Day is the opportunity to display your pride lavishly, then the other 364 days of the year are for simply being unassumingly Irish. After all, that’s how the Irish like to live. The emerald represents the undying bond between Mother Ireland and her children. Be a good child of the Emerald Isle and take a piece of her wherever you go
