Learning the skill of horseback riding is a unique skill that many people enjoy. But riding horseback is a prestigious hobby that is respected in many parts of the world. If you have been learning this respectable hobby, here are some tips to keep in mind to help you enjoy it to its fullest.
Never Ride Alone
Going horseback riding can be a liberating experience. But regardless of the freedom you feel when you go riding horseback; you should never go riding alone. Even if you have the best horse equipment and safety gear, accidents do happen and if you are alone when something happens, you could be putting yourself in danger. Depending on the seriousness of your accident, you could be putting your life in danger by going on a horseback ride by yourself.
Wear the Proper Attire
There are several pieces of attire that you should wear when riding a horse. For one thing, you should avoid wearing boots with large treads or deep arches because you can get your feet stuck in the stirrups if you do that. But you should also wear a pair of quality chaps when riding a horse. Chaps will help keep your legs from rubbing against the horse too much and causing friction which can lead to a severe rash. Chaps also provide another layer of comfort in case you go horseback riding in the cold weather and they also keep your legs from swinging too much during your ride. Protective head gear is another must for horseback riding in case you fall off and your head hits the ground. A proper helmet will help minimize injury and other severe damage.
Caring for Your Horse
Whether you are taking up horseback riding for a leisurely activity or if you want to compete in show jumping, caring for your horse is essential. For one thing, you should make sure your horse is drinking plenty of water. When winter and the colder months come around, horses tend to drink less water. Unfortunately, this can cause colic. You can encourage your horse to drink more water by adding some salt to his diet and making the water lukewarm so it isn’t cold enough to shock their system.
These are just a few of the things to consider if you are going to take your horseback riding hobby seriously. And remember to look for equestrian supplies on clearance in order to keep your hobby within your budget so you don’t spend too much.

I’m going horseback riding in Florida at Disney in April. I figured I’d just wear jeans. You think that’d be ok?
