Today is a sad day for long time viewers of Guiding Light like myself. 72 Long and great years and more than 15000 episodes of Great soap opera history is NOW OVER! I Grew up watching Guiding light and must admit that I feel that I am losing long time friends and family. I have never Been attached to a TV show like I have been to guiding light and I am only 30!
I remember watching it as a child with my mother and grandmother, then by the time I was in 5th grade coming home from school when others was watching cartoons I was hitting PLAY On the VCR to catch what I missed on Guiding Light! Yea I had It bad even up in till today I always made sure everything was done so I could catch ,As the world turns and Guiding light and For ANY reason I was not able to watch it DVR Was to my Rescue!
This week while watching it I admit I have cried many tears with my kids looking at me like I have gone crazy. It seems so unreal! I think it finally hit me that it was the end When Alan Spaulding Died cause we all know with out him Springfield would never be the same!
I am so Upset with the decision with taking them off the air! I would have picked Young and the restless or bold in the beautiful to go off any day Compared to Guiding Light. Guiding Light Always kept you wanting and waiting for more each and every day!
So What’s your thoughts on this? were you a guiding light fan and what happens now?!

My mother listened to Guiding Light on the radio when she was pregnant with me. I got hooked in high school and watched for years and years until I finally decided that I’d had enough of looking at Reva day in and day out. The timing worked out well for me because the cutie who used to play Alan Michael when he was married to Harley was on General Hospital. He was the brother of the head of the mob, and he had kidnapped his brother’s pregnant wife. Oh good – this had to be a short-term role for him because there’s no way the mob guy wasn’t going to end up killing him. So I decided to watch until he was murdered. Little did I know how General Hospital works – no matter how many bombs go off or mob guys start shooting, nobody dies but bit characters.
I loved Roger Thorpe. I thought it was horrible that they didn’t let him finish out his last days at Guiding Light. I liked the original Alan Spaulding, too. He was such a weasel, and he looked the part. I liked the original Beth – I never got used to the nasal, whiny one who was…. blind? deaf? In fact, of all the recastings, the only one I liked was Blake. My husband couldn’t even tell the difference between the original and the new one.
Ross Marler went to my parents’ church in real life!
I flipped it on today, expecting to see a trip down memory lane. What a surprise to see all these people I didn’t know. Oh well – just as well – I’m sure half of it would have been of Reva anyway.
I too cried all week watching the last episodes. My kids were so sweet when I tried to explain why it makes me so sad (My husband told me I am crazy). I watched the show all my life with my mom and grandmother. I never realized how many memories of them are associated with watching the show. I am glad I found your comments and see that I am not the only one who feels the loss. I was hoping they would make it a half hour show but still keep it going.
