Growing up I remember watching my grandmother work many hours in her garden in the summer time. She wouldn’t have it any other way. She grew all her food. I am not talking about a small garden either! My grandmother didn’t know how to do anything without it being BIG! She started working in the fields at age 3 and didn’t stop till the DR. told her no more. I think she was 75 then. I think that was one of the saddest days of her life. She was never really the same after that. That was all she ever knew and it made her happy. My Uncle seen that she really missed the work, so he took over. He would do all the hard work outside and my grandmother would still be able to can and freeze all her food in the cool house.
When I got married and had kids she thought I was supposed to do the same. She said she don’t understand our generation. We would rather buy than grow our own foods which taste a lot better than bought and cheaper. I will admit Home grown taste so much better. I just don’t have a green thumb and none of her other grandchildren do either lol. My Grandmother passed away 3 years ago and my uncle still keeps her memory going. Now he does all the work.
Triscuit has launched the Home Farming Movement in collaboration with the non-profit organization Urban Framing. Together, Triscuit and Urban Farming plan to create 50 community-based home farms across the country in 2010 in order to connect communities through growing food together.
Urban Farming is a non-profit organization. They have a mission to create an abundance of food for people in need by planting farms on unused land and space while increasing diversity, educating youth, adults and seniors and providing an environmentally sustainable system to uplift communities.
From rural areas to urban communities, home farms are sprouting up all over the country, and it’s only just begun. Triscuit’s goal of helping Americans everywhere create their own home garden by placing plantable herb seed cards in four million boxes of Triscuit crackers.
When I heard about this project from Mom Central, All I could think about was how happy my grandmother would be. With Earth Day right around the corner, this spring proves ideal for incorporating home growing values into your family’s life.
